- July 9-13, 2012 2012 SIAM Annual
Meeting, Minneapolis, MN. Tim Scheibe has been invited to give a keynote
lecture.
- June 17-21, 2012 2012 Computational
Methods in Water Resources (CMWR) Conference, Champaign-Urbana, IL. Tim Scheibe is
co-organizing a special session on "Hybrid Multiscale Models in Subsurface Flow and Transport."
Tim Scheibe and Ilenia Battiato will present invited talks as part of that session.
- Late 2011 or Early 2012 Request for proposals for SciDAC-3 Science Applications and Science
Application Partnerships expected to be released by DOE-SC (BER/ASCR).

- December 5-9, 2011 2011
American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, San Francisco, CA. Several project
members attended the meeting. Delphine Roubinet
(a new post-doc working with Daniel Tartakovsky under this project) gave an oral
presentation entitled "A hybrid continuum-scale model with pore-scale refinements for
biogeochemical processes," (Abstract H54C-06).
- Nov. 28, 2011 Interagency
Steering Committee on Multimedia Environmental Modeling (ISCMEM),
Rockville, MD. Tim Scheibe presented results from this project to the committee via
teleconference.
- Nov. 12-18, 2011 SuperComputing 2011,
Seattle, WA. Project material was displayed at the
PNNL exhibit booth. Khushbu Agarwal and Karen Schuchardt presented
our current work on the STOMP-SPH hybrid many-parallel system in the co-located workshop:
4th Workshop on Many-Task Computing on Grids
and Supercomputers (MTAGS).

Distinguished Lecture Series, University of Utah,Tim Scheibe presented an invited
lecture on "Quantifying Flow and Reactive Transport in the Heterogeneous Subsurface Environment:
From Pores to Porous Media and Facies to Aquifers."
- September 18-22, 2011
ModelCARE 2011, Leipzig, Germany. Tim Scheibe presented a talk on the
visualization of large 3D simulation datasets.
- July 10-14, 2011 SciDAC 2011
Conference in Denver, CO. Tim Scheibe served on the program committee
and coordinated the subsurface science portion of the meeting. Bruce Palmer and Karen
Schuchardt presented a poster in the "SciDAC Successes" session.

MODFLOW and More 2011 conference in Golden, CO. Tim Scheibe served on the
program committee and gave an invited featured presentation on hybrid multiscale
modeling.

Distinguished Lecture Series was given by Tim Scheibe throughout North America
and Europe. One of the
two offered lectures was based largely on material from this project.

SuperComputing 2009 in Portland, OR. Tim Scheibe presented material
on "Scalable Applications for Subsurface Science" at the PNNL Exhibit.
- October 13-14, 2009
SDM All-Hands Meeting in Davis, CA. Karen Schuchardt was invited to give a presentation
on the SALSSA framework and our experiences using the SDM Kepler product.
- September 24-25, 2009 SciDAC TOPS Center researchers visited PNNL
to initiate collaboration on application of adjoint methods to error estimation in
hybrid multiscale modeling. Participants: Carol Woodward (LLNL); Don Estep and Simon Tavener
(Colorado State Univ.); Victor Ginting (Univ. of Wyoming) and PNNL project staff.
- August 9-14, 2009
33rd IAHR Congress in Vancouver, BC. Alexander Tartakovsky co-chaired a special
session on applications of the SPH method in hydrology.
- July 23-24, 2009
2009 CCA Forum Held in Seattle, WA. Bruce Palmer gave a presentation on our
recent experiences with the BOCCA platform.

SciDAC 2009 Conference was held at the
Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, San Diego, CA. Tim Scheibe served on the Program
Committee and chaired the Geosciences session. Bruce Palmer and Karen Schuchardt gave
invited poster presentations at the conference.
- May 24-27, 2009
American Geophysical Union Joint Assembly in Toronto, ON. Tim Scheibe was the Hydrology
Section representative on the Program Committee, and co-chaired two special sessions.
- May 7-8, 2009 Workshop:
"Large Scale Production Computing Requirements for Biological
and Environmental Research" was held in Rockville, MD. Bruce Palmer and Tim Scheibe
were invited to serve as co-leads for the environmental science area and gave
presentations.

BER Environmental Remediation Sciences Program
Annual Investigator Meeting in Lansdowne, VA. A mid-term review of our project was
conducted during and following the PI meeting; project staff presented four
posters and one platform presentation and met with a review panel.

SuperComputing 2008 in Austin, TX. Tim Scheibe attended and gave a
presentation on subsurface
simulation at PNNL's exhibit.
- November 10-11, 2008 Tim Scheibe and Alexander Tartakovsky met with
co-PI Daniel Tartakovsky and doctoral student Ilenia Battiato at the University of
California San Diego to develop project plans for the upcoming year.
- October 28-29, 2008 Tim Scheibe visited Idaho National Laboratory to work
with George Redden and other project collaborators. They installed version 2.0 of the
SALSSA workflow tool to support INL staff in running STOMP simulations for design of upcoming
intermediate-scale laboratory experiments.
- September 7-10, 2008
Delivering Science on Petascale Computers conference in Falls Creek, TN. Tim Scheibe
attended and presented a poster.
- June 16 - August 29 UC San Diego PhD candidate Ilenia Battiato visited PNNL
as a summer intern to work on SPH simulation and quantifying regions of a simulation in which
criteria for continuum mixing and reaction are violated. These regions are candidates
for automated algorithm refinement in the hybrid multiscale framework.
- July 28-31, 2008 Vicky Freedman attended the
CScADS Summer Workshop
on Scientific Data Analysis and Visualization for Petascale Computing in Snowbird, UT.
- July 13-17, 2008
SciDAC 2008 in Seattle. Tutorials Friday, July 18. Tim Scheibe, Bruce Palmer,
Karen Schuchardt, and Alexander Tartakovsky attended the conference, and Tim Scheibe
presented a poster on Wednesday evening.
- July 8, 2008 Jared Chase attended the
IEEE 2008 Second International Workshop on Scientific Workflows (SWF’08) in
Hawaii. A
short paper was submitted for the conference
proceedings.
- July 6-10, 2008 Computational Methods in Water Resources
conference in San Francisco, CA. Tim Scheibe will gave an invited talk on
"Pore-scale modeling of reactive and non-reactive transport: Upscaling and multiscale hybrid modeling."
Yilin Fang presented a poster on "Coupling finite elements and smoothed
particle hydrodynamics methods for reactive transport."

Kepler/CORE Stakeholders Meeting at UC Davis. Karen Schuchardt and Jared Chase
attended and presented our use of Kepler within the SALSSA workflow environment.

Common Component Architecture (CCA) Forum Meeting. Bruce Palmer attended and gave a presentation.
- March 12-13, 2008 Tim Scheibe attended the joint BES/BER/OASCR/FE
workshop on "Basic Research Relevant to CO2 Sequestration" and presented a
poster on this SciDAC science application project.
- January 23, 2008 Tim Scheibe gave a web-based presentation on the
topic of "Metabolic and multi-scale models" as part of the internet workshop
"Developing a Roadmap to Accelerate Deployment of Field-Scale Models to Simulate
Microbially-Mediated Remediation Performance of Contaminated Sites."
- January 10-12, 2008 Tim Scheibe and Paul Meakin attended the
Scientific Impacts and
Opportunities for Computing workshop in Maui, HI. They each gave presentations and
served as panelists for the geosciences portion of the workshop. Links to their talks

- December 10-14, 2007
American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting Tim Scheibe gave an invited
presentation in the session "Subsurface Reactions Controlled by Mixing and Mass
Transfer: From Pore to Field Scales." Karen Schuchardt gave a poster presentation
and computer demonstration of the prototype workflow environment in the session
"Recent Advances in Groundwater Hydrology." Alexandre Tartakovsky presented a poster
entitled "Mixing-induced precipitation: Experimental study and multi-scale numerical analysis."
- November 28-30, 2007 Scientific Data Management (SDM)
All-Hands Meeting in Snoqualmie, WA. Jared Chase presented a demonstration of the
workflow and data management system for reactive transport simulation.
- November 12-16, 2007
Supercomputing 2007 (Reno, NV) Tim Scheibe,
Karen Schuchardt, and Bruce Palmer attended. The PNNL exhibit included a poster
representing this project, and Karen Schuchardt and Tim Scheibe gave a presentation
and software demonstration at the exhibit on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.

the Journal of Physics: Conference Series.
- May 21-25, 2007 American Geophysical Union Joint Assembly (see

presented a poster in a topical session entitled "Multiscale Multiphysics Modeling of Multiphase Flow in Porous Media."
- April 4, 2007 Tim Scheibe visited SUNY Stony Brook (SciDAC/ITAPS investigators
